Partial Plating Error
This is an interesting error! This error occurs when the zinc planchet sheet is going through the copper plating process. Either the machine runs out of copper or something obstructs an area of the zinc planchet sheet and plates over the item that obstructed the plating to the zinc planchet sheet. When the zinc planchet sheet is finished being plated, it is taken out and if something was on it, it will usually fall off. If the sheet is not properly inspected and gets the ok to go to the minting press with an unplated area then you get unplated, partially unplated, and partially plated cents as a result of this. It is not very common to get these out in circulation and many people will probably mistake these errors as a coin that has been colored with a marker. However, since it is missing a layer of copper, you can tell right away since it will be deeper in the area of missing copper plating.
