Struck Thru Error
This is an error that is fairly common. Though on some denominations it is worth more due to that people simply demand them more. The way that this error happens is quite simple. Something gets in between the coin die and the coin planchet before striking. Then the coin gets struck and the impression of what got in between is transfered to the coin. In some rare cases, the item that caused the strike thru gets stuck into the coin and is retained in the coin. This is then called a retained struck thru error because the item was retained in the coin. Coins can be struck through anything. Staples, grease, cloth, plastics, and many more small objects. The monetary value of these errors is all over the place, from a couple of dollars to several hundred. This is a widely known error and quite common but attracts many collectors to it.
