Broadstrike Coin Error

This error happens when the half dollar planchet is not surrounded by the coin collar and the hammer die strikes down and since the force of the strike is so high, it spreads the planchet outward in all directions. The result is that you end up with a fifty cent coin that is larger in diameter than your typical half dollar coin. The width of these broadstrikes varies from slightly larger than a normal half dollar up close to 50% increase in width.
